Description: The Community Guide, developed
by a non-Federal Task Force on Community Preventive Services,
offers leadership in the evaluation of community, population
and health care system strategies to address a variety of
public health and health promotion topics.
Information Available: A systematic review of the effectiveness
of community-based tobacco interventions. The chosen programs
fit within one of three areas of tobacco use prevention and
control: 1) preventing tobacco product use initiation, 2)
increasing cessation and 3) reducing exposure to environmental
tobacco smoke (ETS).

Description: The NGA Center for Best
Practices tracks state efforts to prevent and control tobacco

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

Description: SAMHSA provides information
on health problems related to the use and abuse of drugs and
alcohol, substance abuse treatment, the mental health condition
of the population and administers and evaluates Federal block
grants to the states.
Information Available: SAMHSAs National Registry
of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) is a searchable
database of mental health and substance abuse interventions
that have been reviewed and rated by independent reviewers.

Description: The Office of the Surgeon
General, under the direction of the Surgeon General, oversees
the 6,000-member Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health
Service and provides support for the Surgeon General in the

and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Americans for Nonsmokers'
Rights (ANR)

Description: ANR is a national lobbying
organization dedicated to nonsmokers' rights, taking on the
tobacco industry at all levels of government to protect nonsmokers
from secondhand smoke and youth from tobacco addiction. ANR
pursues an action-oriented program of policy and legislation.

Description: ASH serves as the legal
action arm of the nonsmoking community, bringing or joining
in legal actions concerning smoking and advocating for the
nonsmoker. The organization also serves as an advocate of
the nonsmokers' rights movement.

Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids

Description: The Campaign, one of the
nation's largest non-governmental initiatives ever launched,
works to protect children from tobacco addiction and exposure
