Foundation Awards $6 Million in
Basic Support Grants
St. Louis -Fifty-eight
Missouri organizations have received a share of nearly $6
million in grants from Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH)
as part of its Basic Support funding effort. The two-year
Basic Support grants help organizations maintain existing
programs and services. To date, the Foundation has awarded
$20 million in Basic Support funding to organizations across
Missouri.
Those organizations receiving Basic Support grants are:
Almost Home, St. Louis, $100,000. This grant enables
the organization to provide counseling, case management and
education services to homeless teenage mothers and their children.
Alzheimer's Association of St. Louis, St. Louis, $100,000.
Funding supports operational costs to provide information
and other outreach services to individuals in southeast Missouri.
Alzheimer's Association Southwest Missouri Chapter,
Springfield, $100,000. Funding supports current programs and
services, including respite care, referrals and support groups.
Area Resources for Community & Human Services (ARCHS),
St. Louis, $199,984. Funding enables the organization to offer
vision screenings and eyeglasses for uninsured, underinsured
and underserved people in metropolitan St. Louis.
The Belle Center, St. Louis, $89,641. This grant supports
salaries, supplies and expenses for the Health Therapy Services
Program, which assists children with medical conditions and
their families.
Bootheel Regional Human Needs Center, Kennett, $26,100.
Funding supports the organization's operating costs and provides
hygiene supplies for low-income families in Dunklin and Pemiscot
counties.
Brain Injury Association of Missouri, Inc., St. Louis,
$100,000. Funding is for equipment and operational costs for
the organization, which increases public awareness of brain
injuries through education and services to individuals and
families.
Broseley Senior Center, Inc., Broseley, $7,164. This
grant enables the center to maintain its meal delivery program
to seniors in the southeast Missouri community.
The Center for Head Injury Services, St. Louis, $72,478.
This grant maintains the organization's efforts to provide
durable medical equipment to uninsured individuals in the
metropolitan area.
Community Counseling Center, Cape Girardeau, $191,581.
This grant provides operational support for the organization,
which offers behavioral health and prevention services in
five southeast counties.
Community Living, Inc., St. Louis, $197,971. Funding
helps with operational and equipment costs for the organization,
which provides health care and residential services to adults
with disabilities.
Comprehensive Human Services, Inc.-The Shelter, Columbia,
$98,730. Funding supports operational costs for the organization,
which provides services to victims of domestic violence and
sexual assault.
Council for Extended Care of Mentally Retarded Citizens,
Inc., St. Louis, $92,949. Funding supports costs for staff
training as part of the organization's operation of a care
facility for mentally retarded individuals.
Cross Trails Medical Center, Cape Girardeau, $199,724.
This grant allows the center, which provides medical and dental
care, to enhance its reporting system and make improvements
to its telecommunications system.
The Doula Foundation of Mid-America, Springfield, $62,930.
Funding supports operational costs of the organization, which
provides prenatal care and education to at-risk pregnant women
in Greene and surrounding counties.
Family Care Health Centers, St. Louis, $200,000. Funding
supports the organization's efforts in providing access to
oral health services for underserved individuals.
Family Planning Clinic of Franklin County, Inc., St.
Clair, $98,041. This grant supports operational costs for
the clinic, which provides family planning services to women.
Family Violence Center, Inc., Springfield, $100,000.
This grant supports operational expenses of the organization,
which provides shelter, advocacy and education to victims
of domestic violence.
Fordland Clinic, Inc., Fordland, $98,828. Funding supports
operational costs to provide a variety of services in Webster
County, including health screenings, nutrition counseling,
nicotine cessation, cavity prevention and mental health assessments.
Gasconade-Osage County Health Department, Hermann,
$91,330. This grant pays for replacement equipment and health
resource materials for the department.
Good Samaritan Service Center for the Homeless, St.
Louis, $100,000. This grant supports the organization's transitional
housing program, which provides residential and support services
for homeless families in St. Louis City and County.
Howell County Health Department, West Plains, $98,776.
Funding supports the organization's Well Woman program, which
provides women with access to cancer screenings and basic
health care services.
The Independent Living Center, Inc., Joplin, $70,700.
This grant funds an accessibility coordinator for the organization,
which assists people with disabilities through support services
and community education.
Kilo Diabetes & Vascular Research Foundation, St.
Louis, $100,000. This grant supports operational costs of
the organization, which provides no-cost diabetes awareness
programs and screening services to high-risk seniors.
Lewis County Health Department, Monticello, $11,766.
Funding supports the health department's prenatal care program
in northeast Missouri.
Madison County Health Department, Fredericktown, $99,220.
This grant supports the health department's efforts in immunizing
all Madison County children by age two.
Maternal Child and Family Health Coalition of Metropolitan
St. Louis, St. Louis, $67,000. This grant covers operational
expenses of the organization, which works to improve maternal,
child and family health.
National Kidney Foundation of Eastern Missouri & Metro
East, St. Louis, $94,967. This grant provides for operation
costs related to the organization's screening program for
kidney disease among lower income, uninsured and underinsured
people.
NECAC Family Planning, Hannibal, $88,765. This grant
maintains existing family planning services and also provides
for staff training and equipment purchases.
New Madrid County Health Department, New Madrid, $94,882.
Funding maintains the health department's family planning
services.
Our Little Haven, St. Louis, $99,586. Funding allows
the organization to provide early intervention and care for
infants and young children affected by abuse and neglect.
Ozark County Health Department, Gainesville, $100,000.
Funding from this grant supports an established walking program
for residents of this south-central Missouri county.
Paraquad, Inc. St. Louis, $200,000. This grant supports
the organization's Consumer Directed Services/Independent
Living Services program, which helps disabled individuals
live independently.
Perry County Community Health Task Force, Perryville,
$59,924. Funding supports expenses related to the organization's
youth substance prevention program.
Phelps County Family Crisis Services, Inc., Rolla,
$91,218. Funding supports operational expenses of the organization,
which provides shelter, counseling, and health and social
services to victims of domestic violence.
Presbyterian Children's Services, Inc., St. Louis,
$200,000. Funding supports mental health services offered
by the organization, which hopes to prevent child abuse and
neglect and serves children and families in 49 Missouri counties.
Provident Counseling, Inc., St. Louis, $190,033. This
grant supports operational expenses related to the organization's
prevention, intervention and treatment health services for
youth and families.
Safe House for Women, Inc., Cape Girardeau, $43,688.
Funding enables the domestic violence shelter to continue
providing child advocacy services.
St. Louis Care and Counseling Services, Inc., St. Louis,
$34,950. Funding allows the organization to continue providing
transportation to health providers for the elderly and disabled
in the City of St. Louis.
St. Louis Regional Asthma Consortium, St. Louis, $99,978.
This grant supports operational expenses of the organization,
which strives to improve the quality of life of people living
with asthma.
St. Louis Transitional Hope House, St. Louis, $100,000.
Funding supports the organization's follow-up program for
former homeless individuals leaving the structured residential
program.
The Salvation Army, Jefferson City, $99,729. Funding
supports healthcare services to homeless individuals in Cole
County.
Scott County Public Health Center, Benton, $100,000.
This grant supports the health center's family planning and
reproductive health services for low-income, uninsured and
underinsured women.
Shannon County Health Center, Eminence, $57,226. This
grant provides staff salaries, equipment and supplies for
the center's health screenings program for the uninsured and
underinsured.
Southeast Missouri Area Agency on Aging, Cape Girardeau,
$200,000. This grant provides food and supplies for the organization,
which provides meals and nutritional services to the low-income
elderly in New Madrid, Pemiscot and Scott counties.
Stone County Health Department, Galena, $99,919. This
grant supports the Wellness Clinic, which provides physical
exams, screenings and nutrition education to residents of
this southwest Missouri county.
Sullivan County Multi-Purpose Senior Center, Milan,
$34,885. Funding supports equipment replacement at the center,
which provides meals, health screenings and education to seniors
in Sullivan County.
Susanna Wesley Family Learning Center, Inc., East Prairie,
$98,885. Funding allows for the continuation of on-site counseling
and support services to victims of domestic violence in Mississippi
County.
Taney County Ambulance District, Branson, $99,940.
Funding supports operational costs to provide EMS training
for first responders, EMTs and paramedics.
United Services for the Handicapped in St. Charles County,
St. Peters, $199,760. Funding is for staffing so the organization
can continue to strengthen and enhance its physical and occupational
therapy programs.
Washington County Health Department, Potosi, $96,479.
Funding enables the department to provide prenatal care to
Medicaid-eligible women.
Wayne County Health Center, Greenville, $39,182. This
grant supports operational expenses related to the department's
family planning program.
The Wellness Community of Greater St. Louis, St. Louis,
$99,760. This grant supports operational costs related to
conducting support groups for those suffering with cancer.
West End Mount Carmel Community Outreach Services,
St. Louis, $99,588. This grant addresses operational expenses
of the organization, which provides support and education
for individuals coping with addictions.
Wings of Hope, Inc., Chesterfield, $100,000. This grant
covers gasoline and oil expenses needed to maintain the organization's
medical air transport service.
Women's Crisis Center of Taney County, Branson, $100,000.
Funding from this grant provides operational support for the
center, which assists victims of domestic violence in southwest
Missouri.
Wright County Health Department, Hartville, $97,529.
Funding enables the organization to provide health screenings,
education and referrals to Wright County residents.
MFH has committed $12 million
to Basic Support funding in 2006. For more information about

Established in 2000 through the for-profit conversion of Blue
Cross Blue Shield of Missouri, MFH is the largest non-governmental
funder of community health activities in the state. MFH is
in its fourth year of grantmaking, issuing more than $167
million in grants and awards to date. It is dedicated to serving
the uninsured, uninsured and underserved in 84 Missouri counties
and the City of St. Louis.
