Improving MFH's Flexibility & Impact

Increased Impact, Increased Focus: Improving the Health of Missouri

As announced last year, the MFH Board of Directors and staff have been working for several months on a new strategic plan. As the largest health care foundation in Missouri, we have a responsibility to maximize limited resources by identifying and funding health programs where the Foundation can have the greatest possible impact. We have invested significant time and thought in the creation of a Strategic plan designed to do just that. The efforts of our first decade, including those currently underway, have laid the groundwork for this new approach.  We view the new strategic plan as an opportunity to use the lessons learned from MFH’s first 10 years of funding to refocus our vision and draw upon our core values.

MFH's NEW APPROACH

The new strategic plan is designed to increase our focus and impact on the health of Missourians.  In the future we will focus our funding in three portfolios: Responsive, Targeted and Policy.

  • Through our Responsive portfolio, MFH will continue our work providing operational funding for some non-profit health organizations in the communities we serve,  seeking innovative solutions to complex health problems and supporting community developed projects with potential for scale-up and impact.
  • Through our Targeted portfolio, we will create visible and measurable improvements in Missouri through 5-10 year financial and staff investments on four key health issues facing our state. Through discipline and focus on a select number of health issues, MFH can have greater impact on preventing childhood obesity, expanding access to insurance coverage, improving oral health and reducing infant mortality. More detail about our approach to address these issues will come in the following months.
  • Through the Policy portfolio, we will support education, advocacy and analysis in areas of significance to the health of the people in the communities we serve. Given the challenges facing health care in Missouri, policy will be a critical component to truly creating change and improving the health of all Missourians.
The MFH Board of Directors approved this overall strategy in December. Throughout January and February we will be developing an implementation strategy to ensure effectiveness of the plan.  New grant opportunities will begin to rollout after April 1, 2013 and will continue to be released on an ongoing basis into 2014 and beyond.
