St. Louis, Mo., April 7, 2010 -- Eighty Missouri nonprofits have received nearly $5.8 million in grants recently awarded by the Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH). Funding assists organizations that work to improve the health of thousands of Missourians across the state. Grants support organizations’ operational expenses, and programs promoting tobacco prevention and cessation.
First-time MFH grant recipients are marked with an asterisk (*).
Seventy-eight grants totaling more than $5.6 million come through MFH’s Basic Support program. Basic Support funds operational expenses for health-related nonprofits’ existing salaries, benefits, equipment and supplies. Organizations receiving these two-year grants are:
* Agape Christian Counseling Services, St. Louis, $75,000. Funding supports the organization’s efforts to improve access to affordable, professional mental health services, especially for the uninsured and underserved.
Alzheimer’s Association – Mid-Missouri Chapter, Columbia, $75,000. Grant funding supports the nonprofit in improving quality of life for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia, and their caregivers.
* American Red Cross St. Louis Chapter, St. Louis, $75,000. The grant assists the organization in its efforts to provide crisis assistance and educate Missourians about healthy lifestyle choices.
American Red Cross Capital Area Chapter, Jefferson City, $75,000. Funding assists the organization in its efforts to provide crisis assistance and educate Missourians about healthy lifestyle choices.
Area Community Health Emissaries Inc., Anderson, $75,000. Grant funding helps the organization provide dental services to low-income children, adults and disabled citizens in southwest Missouri.
Barceda Families, Lamar, $75,000. Funding assists the organization in providing health education, prevention, intervention, treatment and other resources to low-income, uninsured and underserved families in rural southwest Missouri.
Broseley Senior Center Inc., Broseley, $18,486. The grant helps this rural southeast Missouri organization provide meals and healthy living education to low-income elderly and disabled citizens.
Caring Solutions, St. Louis, $75,000. The grant supports the organization’s efforts to care for children and adults with multiple, severe developmental disabilities.
Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma, St. Louis,$75,000. The grant assists the center in its efforts to provide mental health services to youth and adults affected by war, torture and forced relocation.
Central Missouri Food Bank, Columbia, $75,000. Grant funds contribute to the food bank’s efforts to feed children and families in need.
* Cerebral Palsy of Tri-County Inc., Webb City, $75,000. Funding helps the southwest Missouri organization in its efforts to provide early-intervention, developmental, speech, physical and occupational therapy to children with cerebral palsy.
* C.H.A.M.P. Assistance Dogs Inc., St. Louis, $75,000. Funding supports the organization in training service dogs for disabled children and adults.
* Charleston Nutrition Center Inc., Charleston, $75,000. The grant helps the center provide nutritious meals and health education to seniors in southeast Missouri.
The Child Advocacy Center Inc., Springfield, $75,000. Funding aids the organization in its efforts to treat and support child abuse victims.
The Child Center Inc., Wentzville, $75,000. With the help of grant funding, the St.Louis-area organization assists sexually and physically abused children through counseling, advocacy, forensic interviewing and prevention programs.
* Christian Family Services Inc., St. Louis, $75,000. Funding supports the organization’s efforts to place children in caring foster homes and provide counseling for expectant mothers.
Christos House, West Plains, $75,000. The grant aids the south central Missouri organization in providing crisis shelter and counseling to domestic and sexual abuse victims.
* Coalition Against Rape and Domestic Violence of Callaway County, Fulton, $75,000. Funding helps the central Missouri organization provide support for victims of domestic and sexual abuse.
Community Alliance for Compassionate Care at the End of Life, Springfield, $75,000. With the help of grant funding, the organization offers training and education to healthcare providers who work with terminally ill and elderly patients.
* CREATE Inc., St. Louis, $75,000. Funding assists the organization in providing medical appointment transportation, food and wellness services for seniors.
Delta Gamma Center for Children with Visual Impairments, St.Louis, $75,000. The grant helps the center offer education and therapy services for families with visually impaired children.
The Doula Foundation of Mid-America, Springfield, $75,000. This grant helps the organization provide prenatal, childbirth and postpartum care; health and parenting education; and related services to at-risk families.
Earth Angel Aviators, Wentzville, $21,542. With the help of MFH funding, the St.Louis-area organization offers needy patients free medical transportation throughout the Midwest.
East Central Missouri Area Health Education Center, St.Louis, $75,000. Funding helps the center partner with schools and other organizations to promote health care careers and improve health services for the uninsured and underserved.
East Central Missouri Behavioral Health Services Inc., Mexico, $75,000. The grant helps the central Missouri organization provide services to those with serious mental illness.
* Equine-Assisted Therapy Inc., Robertsville, $55,876. This grant helps the St. Louis-area organization offer equestrian therapy to disabled individuals.
Family Counseling Center of Missouri Inc., Columbia, $75,000. Funding helps the organization provide mental health services, including substance abuse treatment, to patients.
Food Outreach Inc., St. Louis, $75,000. With the help of MFH funding, the organization provides nutrition education and healthy meals for low-income HIV/AIDS and cancer patients.
FreeWay Foundation Inc., St. Louis, $75,000. Funding supports the organization’s efforts to educate students on drug prevention and violence reduction.
Gateway Greening, St. Louis, $75,000. The grant assists the organization in its efforts to increase urban residents’ access to locally grown, affordable, fresh foods through school and community gardening programs.
Gibson Recovery, Cape Girardeau, $75,000. Grant funding assists the center in providing mental health and substance abuse services to low-income patients in southeast Missouri.
Good Samaritan Care Clinic, Mountain View, $75,000. This grant helps the clinic provide medical and dental care for the uninsured and needy in south central Missouri.
* The Guardian Angel Overnight Shelter, Sikeston, $21,644. Funding supports the organization’s efforts to provide shelter, food, and emergency support to the rural poor, the homeless, and victims of domestic violence in southeast Missouri.
GYN Cancers Alliance, Springfield, $56,622. Funding assists the southwest Missouriorganization in providing support, education and emergency financial assistance to women diagnosed with gynecologic cancers.
Haven House Inc., Poplar Bluff, $75,000. Grant funding aids the organization inproviding shelter, counseling and crisis intervention services to women and children in southeast Missouri.
* Health and Dental Care for Kids, St. Louis, $75,000. The grant supports the organization’s work in providing a medical and dental care home for at-risk children.
Healthy Communities St. Charles County, St. Charles, $66,786. Funding helps the St. Louis-area organization educate the community about health issues such as substance abuse, obesity, family violence and senior care.
HOPEBUILD, St. Louis, $20,604. The grant helps the organization increase access to fresh foods and nutrition education in underserved communities.
* Hospice of Northeast Missouri, Kirksville, $75,000. Funding supports the organization’s efforts to provide end-of-life care and assistance for the terminally ill.
House of Pais Inc., St. Louis, $50,000. With the help of grant funding, the organization offers counseling, education, support and therapy to children with mental health concerns, and their families.
Howard Park Early Childhood Center, Ellisville, $75,000. Grant funding helps the St. Louis-area center provide physical, behavioral and developmental therapy to children with disabilities.
Kids in the Middle Inc., St. Louis, $75,000. Funding supports the organization’s efforts to provide mental health services and counseling programs for children dealing with family crises.

* Life Choices Medical Clinic and Resource Center, Joplin,$75,000. Funding assists the southwest Missouri center in providing reproductive health services and parenting classes to individuals in need.
McAuley Counseling Services Inc., Springfield, $75,000. This grant assists the organization inproviding mental health services for the uninsured and underinsured.
Memory Care Home Solutions, St. Louis, $75,000. Funding helps the organization offer training to caregivers of patients with dementia, helping to reduce stress and control health care costs.
Mission Missouri, Sikeston, $75,000. Funding helps the southeast Missouri organization provide mental health services for uninsured adults and children dealing with substance abuse.
National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Missouri, Jefferson City, $75,000. Funding helps the organization provide support and recovery services for children and adults with serious mental illness.
National Alliance on Mental Illness of Southwest Missouri, Springfield, $75,000. With the help of grant funding, the organization provides services, support and education to people dealing with mental illness.
New Beginnings CSTAR Inc., St. Louis, $75,000. This grant assists the organization in its efforts to provide outpatient substance abuse treatment.
* Northeast Missouri Area Health Education Center, Macon,$75,000. This grant assists the organization in its efforts to promote health professional recruitment and training, especially in underserved areas.
Northeast Missouri Health Council Inc., Kirksville,$150,000. Funding supports the organization’s efforts to provide safety-net medical, dental and behavioral health needs for underserved clients.
Nurses for Newborns Foundation, St. Louis, $75,000. This grant assists the organization inproviding services to prevent infant mortality, child abuse and neglect through in-home nursing visits and education.
Ozarks Regional YMCA, Springfield, $150,000. Funding helps the organization offer programs in physical activity, wellness and health education.
Parkland Pregnancy Resource Center, Park Hills, $62,800. Funding assists the southeast Missouri center in providing counseling, supplies and health services for pregnant women and their family members.
* Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri, Columbia, $75,000. The grant assists the organization in providing reproductive health services at two health centers in central Missouri.
Pregnancy Care Center, Springfield, $75,000. This grant assists the center in offering education, mentoring and related services to young adults facing unplanned pregnancies.
Progressive Youth Connection, St. Louis, $75,000. With the help of grant funding, the organization offers violence prevention counseling, character and health education, and related youth development programs.
Rainbow House Emergency Shelter, Columbia, $75,000. Grant funding assists the shelter inproviding resources and therapy for families and children affected by physical or sexual abuse.
Ripley County Family Resource Center, Doniphan, $75,000. Funding helps the southeast Missouri organization provide emergency shelter, housing and mental health services and programs for children and families affected by domestic violence and sexual abuse.
Safe Passage Domestic Violence and Crisis Intervention Center, Moberly, $75,000. With the help of grant funding, the organization offers services and resources to domestic violence victims and their children in rural north central Missouri.
* St. James Caring Center, St. James, $75,000. The grant helps the central Missouri facility provide health and nutrition services and programs to low-income, disabled and senior populations.
St. Louis Area Foodbank Inc., St. Louis, $75,000. Grant funding assists the organization in providing nutritious foods and dietary education to low-income populations.
Saint Louis Effort for AIDS, St. Louis, $75,000. Grant funding helps the organization provide care and support for individuals living with HIV/AIDS, and offer educational outreach to reduce the number of new cases.
St. Louis Peregrine Society Inc., St. Louis, $75,000. The grant helps the organization provide nutritional supplements, transportation and medical supplies to cancer patients.
Southeast Missouri Behavioral Health, Park Hills, $150,000. Funding helps the organization provide substance abuse treatment and support to people in underserved areas.
Southeast Missouri Network Against Sexual Violence, Cape Girardeau, $75,000. With the help of grant funding, the organization offers counseling, advocacy, education and related services to adult and child victims of sexual and physical violence.
* Southwest Missouri Arthritis Association Inc., Joplin,$41,290. Funding helps the organization provide medical equipment and treatment education to arthritis patients and their families.
Stone County Assistance Team – Lakes Area Child Advocacy Center, Branson West, $58,000. Funding assists the southwest Missouri center in providing medical exams, forensic interviews and related services to child victims of sexual and physical abuse.
* Support Dogs Inc., St. Louis, $75,000. The grant helps the organization provide trained service dogs, with a focus on assisting the low-income disabled.
Susanna Wesley Family Learning Center, East Prairie,$75,000. Funding helps the southeast Missouri center provide counseling, domestic violence shelter, health and nutrition programs, and related services to underserved populations.
* TowerVillage Inc., St. Louis, $75,000. Funding assists the organization in offering long-term and in-home care services and education to low-income elderly and disabled people.
* Visiting Nurse Association Hospice Care, St. Louis,$75,000. With the help of grant funding,the organization provides hospice care to terminally ill patients, including the uninsured.
Walker Scottish Rite Clinic for Childhood Language Disorders of St. Louis Inc., St. Louis, $75,000. Funding helps the clinic offer speech and language therapy to children in need.
Warren County Senior Center, Warrenton, $75,000. With the help of grant funding, the St.Louis-area center provides nutritious meals, health screenings, exercise and related programs to the elderly, homebound and disabled.
West County Multiple Sclerosis Center, St. Louis, $75,000. Funding helps the organization offer medical care, training and information for multiple sclerosis patients.
The Women’s Safe House, St. Louis, $75,000. Grant funding assists the organization inproviding crisis shelter and support services to women affected by domestic violence.
Young Choices Inc., St. Charles, $6,200. With the help of grant funding, the organization offers tobacco prevention education to needy and uninsured citizens in the St. Louis area.
MFH’s Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Initiative (TPCI) is a multi-year effort to reduce tobacco use in the state through a variety of funding strategies. MFH awarded a total of $137,796 in TPCI grants to:
American Lung Association of the Central States, St. Louis, $58,004. Grant funding helps the association address tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure among pregnant women and mothers with young children.
University of Missouri, Columbia, $79,792. With the help of grant funding, the university is implementing Phase 2 of the Check Out Project, which aims to reduce tobacco use and related health problems in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning community.
Established in 2000, MFH is the largest nongovernmental funder of community health activities in Missouri. MFH is in its eighth year of grantmaking, having issued more than $363 million in grants and awards to date. It is dedicated to improving the health of unserved and underserved residents in 84 Missouri counties and the City of St. Louis.
