Missouri Foundation for Health Gives $25,000 for Heat-Related Relief

City of St. Louis to Use Funds for Emergency Assistance

St. Louis, Mo., Aug. 9 -As St. Lousians struggle to survive the current heat wave, the Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH) has provided $25,000 to the City of St. Louis' Department of Human Resources to aid in its efforts to provide needed assistance to residents. The grant comes through MFH's emergency fund, which was established to provide financial help in such situations.

"Excessive heat for a prolonged period is a true public health emergency, and one that disproportionately affects the poor, the elderly and the homebound," said Dr. James R. Kimmey, MFH's president and CEO. "The Foundation is happy to be able to respond to such emergencies in a positive and timely fashion, and to assist the City of St. Louis in helping its residents during this August heat wave."

Previously, MFH has provided emergency grants to Missouri organizations dealing with tornadoes, floods and other natural disasters in the state, as well as organizations helping relocated victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Established in 2000, MFH is the largest non-governmental funder of community health activities in Missouri. MFH is in its sixth year of grantmaking, having issued more than $230 million in grants and awards to date. It is dedicated to serving the uninsured, underinsured and underserved in 84 Missouri counties and the City of St. Louis.
