Mental Health & Substance Abuse
About Us

Mental health and substance abuse disorders are serious issues affecting all ages. The facts are staggering:

-80,000 Missourians have a disorder of mental illness and substance abuse.
-14 percent of students have considered attempting suicide.
-27 percent of youth reported using alcohol in the past 30 days—higher than the national average.
-Only 16 percent of Missouri youth with emotional problems receive treatment.

About the Program / History

MFH’s Mental Health & Substance Abuse program funds programs that help with the emotional and physical problems associated with these disorders. During 2006-07, MFH invested nearly $7 million in 23 organizations to integrate their mental health and substance abuse treatment services. In 2008, MFH invested $7.8 million for prevention and treatment services for children and youth with mental health and substance abuse disorders.

Co-Occurring Disorders (COD) Evaluation Summary

The Missouri Institute of Mental Health (MIMH), a center for policy and training at the University of Missouri, is the external evaluator for the COD funding program. This evaluation summary assesses each program’s capability to provide integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders; examines collaboration and service linkages of grantees; and measures organizational characteristics and external influences on best practices.
