Basic Support

Organizations in the Missouri Foundation for Health's (MFH) service region provide a variety of preventive and direct health service programs for the uninsured, underinsured and underserved. MFH recognizes that these organizations have funding needs to support ongoing activities that meet the identified needs of a community and have a track record of success.

The Basic Support program is designed to support organizations whose primary purpose is providing established health programs to the uninsured, underinsured and underserved within the MFH service region.

MFH considers applications from eligible organizations to fund ongoing costs to continue to provide health services central to their mission.  Basic Support funds can only be used for the following general operating expenses (existing salaries and benefits, equipment and supplies).

Basic Support Information

BASIC SUPPORT ELIGIBILITY (these guidelines apply to the Basic Support funding program only)

Eligible organizations:

  • must have a 501(c)(3) tax status.
  • must spend at least two-thirds of its total annual expenses on established health program(s) within the MFH service region.  These expenses must be clearly reported on the most recently filed IRS Form 990 tax return.
  • must be located within the MFH service region (click here for the MFH Service Region) and have an annual expense budget of $10 million or less. In-kind expenses are not considered in determining the size of an organization's annual expense budget.
  • can only apply to the Basic Support funding program once in 2010.
  • must not have an active Basic Support, General Support for Advocacy, or Health Interventions in Non-Traditional Settings grant award at the time of the application deadline for this cycle. An active grant is a grant that has undisbursed grant funds remaining as of the application deadline.  Having an active Basic Support or General Support for Advocacy grant does not prohibit an organization from applying for other MFH funding programs.
  • are limited to 25% of an organization’s annual operating expense as determined from the Form 990.  All current MFH grants and contracts as well as funding allocated to this application are considered in calculating an organization's 25% limit.

GRANT AWARD LIMITS

All Basic Support grants are 24 months in length.  The start date is determined once funding decisions are made (see Funding Opportunities section at the top right of this page).

For eligible organizations, MFH will determine the grant award amount based on two criteria:

          • applicant organization’s size in dollars; and
          • available funding in the Basic Support program.

The amount of the grant is determined as follows:

Annual Expenses
Range of Award (Annual)
$5 Million or Less
$37,500 - $50,000
$5 - 10 Million
$75,000 - $100,000

MFH funding is limited to 25% of an organization’s annual operating expense.  All current MFH grants and contracts as well as funding allocated to this application are considered in calculating an organization's 25% limit.
